How you start your morning paves the way for the rest of your day. If you want to accomplish your goals and feel good about the day you’re having, there are a few positive practices you can add to your morning routine that make a HUGE difference. These tips will make you feel better, more accomplished, and give you the ability to approach each day with a positive attitude and an unbreakable sense of accomplishment.
For those of us who aren’t naturally morning people (guilty) waking up early and having a full and fulfilling morning may seem like a distant dream. But really it’s so easy to add a couple of habits that will keep you productive and in the right mindset throughout the day. I don’t recommend trying to do it all at once. Adding a few mindful practices to your routine gradually will put you on track to feel happier, more energized, and ready for anything that comes at you today!
Make Your Bed
This is one of the most important tips I can give you when it comes to getting your day off to the right start. The rest of this list falls in no particular order besides this one. Making your bed is the first step you can take in the morning towards feeling accomplished and good about your day. It seems so simple but something about making your bed pulls the entire room together and will make you want to keep accomplishing things. It’s a domino effect. Once your bed is made, you feel that much more put together and ready to tackle what’s next.
Meditate / Pray
Meditation and prayer is different for everyone. Whether it be reflective, thinking positive thoughts, or praying about things you’re grateful for or need help with. Taking the time to give yourself a positive mindset and to do nothing else but think can really help clear your mind. Reflection puts you in the right space to know what you need to get done for the day and do it happily. It’s important to take a step back, see how far you’ve come, and see how far you want to go. Meditation and prayer doesn’t have to last long, but it will provide lasting thoughtfulness throughout your morning and the rest of your day.
Drink Something You Enjoy
That hot cup of something has been apart of morning routines for decades. Drinking something that you enjoy in the morning will awaken your senses and make you feel good. It doesn’t have to be something hot, just let yourself enjoy something in the morning that you look forward to. That could be tea, a glass of juice, or even a cup of coffee. Drinking coffee all day every day probably isn’t the greatest but like everything in life, moderation is key. Don’t deprive yourself! Just find that something that makes you feel ready to take on your day! (For me it’s Chai Tea.) If you can drink something healthy, bonus points! (Green tea is filled with antioxidants and vitamins.)
Take a Walk
Getting outside in the morning is completely underrated! I used to think there was no way to make time to wake up early and walk around the neighborhood. In reality, an extra 10-15 minutes in the morning is easy and leaves you feeling refreshed. If you have a pet, even better! You could both use a nice walk in the morning to get your blood flowing and enjoy time outside before the day begins.
For some of us waking up to exercise in the morning may seem impossible or unappealing. But once you wake up and get going (the hardest part) it really feels good to get your body moving before you start your day. It leaves you feeling more energized physically and mentally. Morning exercise also boosts your metabolism and allows you to keep burning calories throughout the day. As if you needed another reason!
Practice Yoga or Stretch
Heavy exercise in the morning isn’t for all of us. There are more relaxed ways to get your body moving that don’t require you to leave your home. Taking some time in the morning to practice yoga or stretch will help wake your body up and will loosen up any tense or tight muscles. It’s also great for mental relaxation along with deep breathing. Check out some of my favorite poses to do in the AM:
Journal and Write Down the Things You’re Grateful For
Journaling is a great part of any productive day. Always keep a notebook handy because you never know when you’re next great idea will come and you don’t want to risk losing it with a mental reminder.
In the morning take a few minutes to jot down the things that you are grateful for. Reflect on your week and write down what you plan to accomplish and what your goals are. Journaling is great for harnessing creativity and for positivity. You can look back and see how much you’ve grown and have an outlet that helps you keep track of your great ideas, reflections, and all that you want to achieve.
Eat your breakfast outside
Something about being outside awakens the soul! I’m guilty of spending some mornings couped up in the house dreading the moment I have to step out the door. But why? As soon as I’m outside I feel refreshed and ready to start the day. Eating your breakfast outside is a great way to enjoy those extra few moments in your morning.
Drink 8oz of Water with Lemon
I doubt I have to tell you all of the amazing benefits of drinking water. Water is crucial to your body’s health so drinking a full glass first thing in the morning will give you the hydration you need to start your day off right. Add a lemon for a metabolism boost and essential vitamins that will work for your body all day long.
Go over your goals and your plan for the day
I always recommend planning out your day the previous night before you go to sleep. That way, when you wake up in the morning you know what your goals are and you don’t waste any time figuring out what you need to get done that day. When you wake up with a plan, you can get straight to it and accomplish more throughout your day.
In the morning, take a look at your planner or go over the things on your list for that day. You’ll feel more organized and more on track to get everything done. This will also allow you more time in the morning to enjoy yourself and relax instead of figuring out that day’s to-do list.
Cut out social media, tv, and any electronics. Put down the phone.
When you first wake up, give technology a breather. We’ve become so dependant on our phones and screens that it’s second nature to check your email, social media, and text messages first thing when you wake up. This is bad because you’re suddenly flooded with a million distractions that are bound to get you off track. It’s okay to check your phone throughout the day, but allow yourself to have a morning, and really focus on what’s in front of you before you dive into that digital realm.
Take at least 15-20 minutes to enjoy your morning without your phone and focus on yourself!
Wake up a little bit earlier
Even an extra 10-15 minutes in the morning makes all the difference. Waking up early is hard for some of us (me). Some people are just naturally morning people and shoot right up at the crack of dawn. Some of us however, feel like we just need that extra 10 minutes of sleep and snooze the alarm 5 times to soak up every second in bed we can (whoops).
Listen to Music
This is one of the best ways to start any day. Listen to something that puts you in a good mood and makes you feel good about the day to come. Listening music can increase productivity, focus, and all around make you ready to conquer your day. So turn it up!
Take Your Vitamins
Taking daily vitamins is a great part of any routine and if you do it in the morning they’ll be working in your body throughout the day (right?). Getting in the habit of taking a daily vitamin or nutritional supplements will make you feel better, nourish your body, and give you energy.
Eat something that will make you feel good
Don’t get me wrong pancakes and french toast are definitely a guilty pleasure and SHOULD be enjoyed every so often, but not every day. Feed your body the fuel it needs. Food is meant to nourish us but I also think you should be able to enjoy it the same time. Eating healthy can taste good. But it also feels good. Don’t deprive yourself, it makes it so easy to get off track. Instead aim for a healthy, balanced diet in the morning that doesn’t taste like wheat bran.
