I’m sure you’ve heard of many of the amazing benefits of coconut oil. If you don’t own any of this magical healing oil you have to try it. Coconut oil has powerful antibacterial properties that help protect skin from pathogens and pollution. It helps combat acne bacteria and keep breakouts under control. It can be used as a deep facial cleanser to remove makeup and dirt deep within pores. (Check out this article about the benefits of oil cleansing: )
Besides keeping acne at bay, there are literally countless uses for this stuff. Coconut oil works great as a makeup remover and is safe to apply all over the face. It’s also known to prevent signs of premature aging. The oil provides a barrier between harsh pollutants and UV Rays that cause wrinkles and other skin issues. In addition, it’s the perfect lightweight moisturizer and easily soaks into your skin without feeling too heavy.
(I also LOVE using coconut oil in my hair, for oil pulling, and use it every day for cooking and smoothies.
ALOE VERA GEL
Okay, this stuff is magic. If you don’t own an Aloe Vera plant in your home I highly suggest it. Not only is it a welcoming addition to any corner of the house, there are also so many amazing benefits for your skin. Aloe is anti-inflammatory and helps soothe damaged and irritated skin. It provides instant cooling relief to inflamed acne, bug bites, eczema, and other irritations.
This stuff is also a great moisturizer for acne-prone skin because it doesn’t clog pores. Overtime Aloe Vera also helps erase hyperpigmentation by repairing dead skin cells.
If you don’t like the idea of ripping off pieces of your Aloe plant for your own personal use (this does make me feel bad sometimes) then I suggest getting a natural 100% Aloe Vera gel. I linked my favorite option below.
ROSE HIP OIL
This oil is derived from the seeds of Rose Bushes! It boasts antioxidants and fatty acids that promote skin cell repair and regeneration. Because of this it’s known to be anti-aging and can prevent fine lines and wrinkles. (It’s never too early for prevention.) This stuff is rich in Vitamin A and gives your face a healthy glow. If you love face oils you should check this one out.
Witch Hazel is a potent astringent making it an extremely effective acne treatment. It also naturally treats inflammation, bug bites, and other skin irritations. It zaps bacteria and reduces swelling making it a great toner for your skincare regimen.
There are so many benefits to this natural antibacterial. Best of all it’s completely natural and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals or unreadable ingredients. Studies even show that it can help protect against some types of skin cancer and harmful UV Rays. I could go on and on about how amazing Witch Hazel is, but you’ll just have to see for yourself!
TEA TREE OIL
This essential oil is my saving grace. It can literally clear breakouts overnight. Tea tree oil is an antimicrobial and zaps acne bacteria. In one study it was even proven to be as effective as benzoyl peroxide in treating breakouts. This would work best as a spot treatment and shouldn’t be overused as it can dry out the skin. The best part? It’s totally natural.
(This essential oil has also been effective against skin infections like MRSA and S. aureus, so you know it’s powerful.)
Tip: If you have really sensitive skin tea tree oil can cause irritation, try diluting it with coconut oil or almond oil.
I discovered this stuff years ago when I was having a bad breakout and searched the internet desperately for a natural treatment. So many things I read talked about how incredible Zinc is for clearing acne breakouts. This vitamin naturally reduces keratin on the skin which leads to congested pores.
While Zinc itself is a vitamin naturally present in many foods, you can also take a supplement to help with skin issues. Zinc is another natural ingredient that reduces inflammation and fights acne bacteria. People with acne are known to have lower zinc levels than those with clear skin. Which is why this supplement would be a great addition to your skin care regime if you’re suffering from breakouts.
Talk about a skin clearing powerhouse. Haven’t heard of Activated Charcoal yet? You’re missing out! It works by drawing bacteria, dirt, toxins, and other harmful irritants out of the skin leaving you with a clear complexion and defense against acne.
Charcoal is ideal for oily skin or a bad breakout. Dirt and impurities bind to the activated charcoal and pull any excess oil out of the skin. This is a great deep cleanser and should only be used a couple of times a week so you don’t dry out your skin. It can also be used for bug bites, minor wounds, and irritations since it absorbs any toxins present. This is definitely a go-to if you’re wanting to deep clean your skin.
Tip: Try this powerful Charcoal mask for clear skin overnight! (Activated Charcoal + Bentonite Clay + Water > Let it sit on the skin for 10 minutes and then remove with a warm cloth.)
You’ve probably heard about the many amazing uses of raw honey. This works great in masks or as a spot treatment for stubborn acne. Make sure that you’re using raw honey, processed honey won’t provide the same antibacterial effects. Look for honey with no added ingredients.
Raw Honey draws out excess oil and inflammation from the skin. It has what’s called an “Osmotic Effect” which basically means it soaks up excess water and fluid and releases an antibacterial. It also works to reduce redness and calms stressed out skin. Who knew bees could produce something so amazing for your skin!
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Haven’t jumped on the Apple Cider Vinegar train yet? It’s time! There is an endless list of benefits from using Apple Cider Vinegar. From ingesting it to household cleaning, and of course, skin care, ACV is a nutritional powerhouse.
So what exactly is it about Apple Cider Vinegar that makes it so good for your health? Well, it’s extremely rich in potassium and vitamins. It’s also a natural antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial. While ACV is amongst the many antibacterials on this list, it also exfoliates skin and balances your pH levels. It’s known to reduce acne, prevent wrinkles, and even fade dark spots.
Make sure you’re using organic raw Apple Cider Vinegar and expect some particles and residue swimming around in the bottle. This is totally natural and is actually referred to as “The Mother”. It contains most of the beneficial proteins, enzymes, and good bacteria. If you haven’t joined in on the ACV hype yet, you’ve got to try it!
Almond Oil is a complexion saver and all-natural source of essential healthy fat and Vitamin E. This oil is extremely mild and great for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Almond oil doesn’t clog pores and absorbs easily into the skin. It actually works to clean dirt and impurities.
This natural oil is also magic if you struggle with dark circles. It renews skin cells and penetrates skin to provide deep (but lightweight) hydration.
Tip: Take a few drops of Almond Oil and lightly apply it underneath your delicate eye area with your ring finger before bed (this applies the least amount of pressure).
The uses of Almond Oil are far and wide. It also great for relieving symptoms of eczema and psoriasis and any skin irritations. Almond Oil is also pretty inexpensive which makes it a must try!
